Information graphics or infographics are the tools that researchers and others use to convey information to others in a concise, easily read and interpreted form.  The information may be contained in a single graphic or in several related forms.  The graphics used range from ideographic systems, maps, signs and common graphical forms, such as pie and bar charts, time plots, histograms and scatter plots, to unique graphics created for a specific purpose.  The goals of this first year seminar are to introduce students to infographics, including their cognitive, communication and aesthetic aspects, and to tools needed to design and create their own infographics.
